New Covid Strain With the Potential to Restart the Pandemic

Recently scientists have discovered a new strain of Covid-19 in a Danish Mink farm. Since June the Mink population has spread mutated forms of other viruses. Because of this the government on November 4th ordered that all of the Minks be killed. However this order received a lot of backlash from animal rights activists and faced opposition from low makers. Mink, Ferrets, and animals like them are ver susceptible to SARS-Covid-19 viruses which are quickly passed around their population and eventually to humans.

The Netherlands has seen multiple new cases of mink related Covid 19 cases. The main concern with the mink viruses is that a mutation could make the vaccines in the making invalid.  As of now the Minks have been responsible for 2 new mutations of Covid. According to the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen the new mutation effect the spike protein that the virus uses to infect cells this mutation will cause a decrease the efficacy of antibodies. One scientists discovered that one of the mutations deactivates antibodies in the therapeutic cocktail made by the company Regeneron, which was used to treat U.S. president Donald Trump.
