Last Monday the 13th held one of the most highly anticipated and exciting nights of the year: the 2021 Met Gala. For those who live under a rock, the Met Gala is an opportunity for A-list celebrities to showcase unique and out-of-the-box outfits to fit each year’s theme (this year’s being “American Independence”). We experienced a rollercoaster of emotions while reviewing this year’s outfits, and are excited to share our professional opinions with you.
Starting out with a bang, we have the atrocity that was Camilla Cabello’s dress. Although her accompanist, Shawn Mendes, looked only decent in his unexciting leather jacket and black pants, Camilla’s eyesore of a dress was utterly dreadful. In the words of Lizzie Biran, “[Camilla’s] ensemble of choice was giving Discount Dance vibes; however, as much as I hated her look, it was on theme, because it was representative of early 2010s eight-year-old competition dance costumes.”
Changing courses completely, Kim Kardashian displayed an all-black skin-tight suit, covering her entire face and highlighting her famous silhouette. Although our first reaction was disappointment, after further consideration, we believe her outfit choice to be clever and representative of the theme. What could be considered more representative of American culture than Kim Kardashian’s renowned silhouette? Notice how her face was never even visible, yet we all knew it was Kim Kardashian, proving the recognizability of her figure. Overall, Kim’s outfit was a yes from us.
To conclude, we have Billie Eilish, who surprised us with a look different than her typical style. Billie surely stepped out of her comfort zone with a voluminous and extravagant Oscar de la Renta ballgown, as opposed to her usual oversized casual attire. The reasoning for this unexpected twist is that Eilish agreed to wear Oscar de la Renta on the condition that the legendary designer stop selling fur. This is an admirable move on Eilish’s part, as she is creating real change for a necessary cause in the fashion industry, using her platform for good, which is more than many other celebrities of her status can say.
Thank you for reading our professional review, and we hope we were able to enlighten the Severn community on this momentous occasion of fashion!
