What is the Greatest Holiday Movie of All Time? Severn Students Weigh In

By Anna Clark and Caroline Brenia, ‘25

Macaulay Culkin in the #1 Christmas movie of all time: Home Alone

The holiday season is upon us, which means delicious food, quality time with family and friends, and a break from school. But most importantly, holiday movies! We surveyed the Severn Upper School student body to determine the greatest holiday movie of all time, and the results are in.

Coming in first place is the 1990 classic Home Alone. This was a predictable victory–who doesn’t love Home Alone? In our opinion, it might be a bit overhyped, but overall still a great film. It’s worth noting that the whole series is beloved, as Home Alone 2: Lost in New York came in fourth place.

In second place we have Elf. Only a Cotton-Headed Ninny Muggins wouldn’t love such an absolutely hilarious movie. We have to say, it’s one of our personal favorites. Elf is a feel-good classic for every snowy winter day. It’s also a go-to movie for teachers to play on the last day before winter break. All in all, an exceptional movie.

Is Bruce Willis battling terrorists really “Christmasy”?

Die Hard is not your typical holiday movie, but surprisingly it took the third-place spot. There is much controversy about whether or not Die Hard can be considered a holiday movie, but it’s good for those who aren’t fans of traditional cheesy Christmas comedies. We’re not quite sure if we consider it a holiday movie ourselves, but the people have spoken and the 1988 Bruce Willis action flick is a favorite nonetheless.

If these movies are getting stale, here are a few brand new ones being released this holiday season. If you’re an avid Netflix watcher, look out for these new hits: A Boy Called Christmas, Love Hard, The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, The Claus Family, Blown Away, A Castle for Christmas, and Father Christmas is Back. Additionally, since Severn loves Home Alone, make sure to check out the remake Home Sweet Home Alone on Disney Plus for a new take on the beloved classic.
