Getting to Know. . . Mr. Starr
Mr. Starr is one of the newest additions to Severn's amazing list of math teachers. In addition to teaching math, he also coaches the JV boys’ soccer team and will coach baseball in the spring. I sat down with Mr. Starr to ask some questions about his life and teaching. |
Where were you living before this?
I was living in Portland, Maine.
What college did you go to, and what was your major?
I went to Colby College, also in Maine, and I was an Economics major.
When you were growing up did you want to be a math teacher?
I don't think that really crossed my mind, no. I wasn't really career driven at that time.
If you had to pick a subject to teach besides math, what would it be?
Probably either English or History.
How is Severn different from where you have taught in the past?
Well this school has a dress code, and my old school was a lot more casual. Also here the students call me Mr. Starr, where at my old school they called the teachers by their first names. That was a big adjustment transitioning to Severn.
What is your favorite part about teaching?
Just helping people understand things, things they didn't understand before.
Did you play sports growing up?
I played soccer, basketball, and baseball when I was in high school, and then in college I played soccer and baseball.
If you weren't teaching what do you think you would be doing right now?
I was an Econ major so probably something to do with managing money. But I'm happy to be teaching and doing what I'm doing.
Which type of math is your favorite to teach? Algebra, Geometry, etc.?
I don't have a favorite yet, too soon to tell!
What is your favorite thing to do besides teaching or coaching soccer?
Probably anything outdoors. I like to get outdoors a lot, but teaching and coaching are my favorite things to do.
