I had the opportunity to sit down with girls varsity tennis captain Jane Huang (’18) and pick her brain about what she loves most about the tennis team.
Question: How long have you been on the tennis team and why have you chosen this as your sport?
Jane: Since freshman year. I love tennis because it focuses on technical skill and mental strength.
What made you want to start playing tennis?
My brother was playing it and we had a bunch of rackets so I just kind of picked it up.
What is the best thing about being a team captain?
Too many things to mention! I enjoy being a leader and being able to help the freshmen out. Also being able to buy all of the snacks.
If you had to describe the tennis team in three words, what would they be?
Dynamic, loud, driven.
What words of advice would you give someone who is considering joining the team?
Even if you don’t think you’re good at tennis it is a fun sport to pick up.
What makes a good tennis coach?
Someone who supports the players no matter what, makes an effort to know each player and tries to make the sport as fun as possible.
Many people see tennis as an “easy sport”, what do you have to say about that?
There was a study done that says tennis is one of the most technical sports -- that you need more skills than luck. The mental game is also huge since you are the only one on the court.
What has been the greatest match moment of your tennis career?
I’d have to say our win over Bryn Mawr.
Looking back on the past three years of playing on the tennis team, what has been the highlight or your greatest memory?
Junior year playing singles, I beat my opponent from Bryn Mawr, which was a great win because they are a really good team.
What will you miss most about tennis when you graduate?
Being surrounded by a group of people who want to play tennis and being around a bunch of people who want to play all the time and have a Severn tennis family.
Come out and support the girls tennis team this fall! The Severn girls play most of their “home” matches at Annapolis High School.
