New Beginnings: 2018 Admirals Girls’ Basketball
by David Seidl ‘19
Going into the 2018-2019 season, the Severn girls’ varsity basketball team has a lot of uncertainties. After the graduation of 2017 player of the year Jorryn Avery, the hiring of their new coach (Mr. Bookie Rosemond), and a team comprised of a lot of freshmen, they are going into this season with their fate in their hands. I asked three influential seniors (Cam Levin, Morgan Skinner, and Sydney Kirchenheiter) some questions about the upcoming season.
David Seidl: How do you feel about your new coach?
Morgan Skinner: I’m excited to have a new start and a change of pace. I really like [Coach Bookie’s] coaching style and hopefully, it will match our play style well.
DS: How do you feel about leading a team mostly comprised of underclassmen?
Sidney Kirchenheiter: It will be frustrating at times, but there are a lot of talented and hard-working freshmen that will definitely be rewarding.
DS: What are your goals for the season?
MS: Ideally we’ll win a championship. We’d be underdogs, so we have nothing to lose. Coming from last year, we have low expectations, but with a new coach, new girls, and new leadership, we have a lot of potential. Hopefully, we will come out on top against some rivals and have a great season.
DS: Are you looking forward to anything unexpected this season?
SK: We have some new warm-up outfits that we’re looking forward to wearing.
DS: What are some highlights from your careers?
Cam Levin: Knockout practices and listening to Christmas music was great. Also, playing against the alumni and getting ice cream was memorable. Morgan dropping 31 points and being nominated for player of the week was a great moment.
DS: Are there any particular opponents that you guys are really looking to beat this year?
MS: Saint Mary’s, as always. And Mount Carmel, because we suffered a tough, close loss to them last year that we hope to avenge this year.
