Ready for a Shot: Admirals Wrestling 2018-19
By Rehman Masood '20
You might be surprised to learn that wrestling is Severn’s oldest sport. The wrestling team dates back to 1920, but was disbanded in 1993. However, Severn wrestling made a comeback in 2011 and has since been a force in the B division, winning multiple MIAA and Maryland Independent State tournament championships. Several Severn athletes have wrestled in college. With an increased roster of nineteen wrestlers coming out for the team (from last year’s eight), expectations are high for this team to build on the success of years past.
One of the strengths of the team is both its youth and its experience. Although the team doesn’t have any seniors, four wrestlers are returning from last years’ team. Seven wrestlers are coming up from a very successful middle school team.
Captain Brad Labella expressed enthusiasm for the team, stating, “Our first day turnout is the best I’ve seen at my time here at Severn. I am super excited for this year.”
Co-captain Sam Bruce stated, “I am excited for this young team to learn and to dominate the B conference”.
Assistant coach Mr. Jefferson Brandt was also hyped up for the season, stating, “We had a good turnout yesterday and [we] are really excited about that. We have a nice core group of guys with experience returning to the mats this year and each has good prospects individually. Last year our biggest problem was not having enough bodies to practice, and hopefully we keep growing. We want to beat St. Mary’s, win the MIAA B tournament and duel title, and win the MIS-B”.
Winning in the B conference is more of a numbers game, and Severn should dominate the numbers game this year. The team is young, hungry, and ready for a shot at the MIAA and MIS titles.
Key Wrestlers: Brad Labella (138), Sam Bruce (120), Ryan Money (106), Darian Harington (195), Rehman Masood (220)
