The Kavanaugh Confirmation: Dr. Ford was Exploited
An opinion piece by Gavin Johnson '19
The attack on then Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh was an attack on due process and a prime example of why the court of public opinion will never be considered the highest court in the land. Under no circumstances should the allegations made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford be forgotten; dismissing survivors of sexual assault under any circumstance is dangerous and unacceptable at any level. Dr. Ford’s testimony, while seemingly earnest, was undercut by a significant void of evidence and all but contradicted by multiple witnesses under oath. If Brett Kavanaugh did indeed commit what he was accused of, then in no way should he have been confirmed, but there was simply not enough evidence to prove Dr. Ford’s story. The only people who know exactly what did or didn’t occur on the night in question are Kavanaugh and Ford themselves. You are innocent until proven guilty in this country, not guilty until you can prove your innocence.
This being said, we should not overlook the precedent set by Democrats during this confirmation process. Dr. Ford, a woman wanting to remain anonymous with her allegations, was used as a political pawn in order to attempt to delay the confirmation hearings until after the recent midterm election. Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein held a letter from Dr. Ford describing her allegations against Judge Kavanaugh for about a month and a half before she passed it on the FBI. Also, if all sides are being truthful, the only people capable of leaking Dr. Ford’s identity to the Washington Post were a handful of Democrats who knew of the letter’s existence. It is shameful that a full-fledged FBI investigation was not initiated the day Senator Feinstein received the letter from Dr. Ford, and it is shameful that Dr. Ford’s identity was revealed to the world so that she was all but forced into testifying in person. There is no logical explanation for why Senator Feinstein held Dr. Ford’s letter other than that she wanted to use the allegations in order to delay Kavanaugh’s confirmation. This gross exploitation of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and her story was nothing short of despicable.
